Preparing for Storm and Flood Damage
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
Nobody enjoys being caught in a storm, much less a flood. Mother nature, on the other hand, is uncontrollable. Because it is impossible to foresee when a flood will occur, the best course of action is to prepare as much as possible ahead of time and then pick up the pieces after the storm has passed. Here are some suggestions for what to do before the storm hits and what you should do once it hits.
Prepare Before the Storm Hits
- If a storm is forecasted, prepare your home by boarding up windows, bringing in outside furniture, sealing your basement against flooding, and elevating your appliances as much as possible.
- Make storm and emergency kits to ensure you have everything you will need to stay safe. In the event of floods, these kits should be stored in watertight containers that may float. Food and water for three days, a first-aid kit, batteries, flashlights, phone power banks, toiletries, clothing and emergency cash should all be included in your kits.
- Before the storm hits, prepare an evacuation plan. Do not delay evacuating after the call has been made. Take all necessary precautions to keep yourself and your family safe.
What To Do After the Storm
Do not panic if you return home to find it damaged by floodwaters, wind, and fallen debris after the storm has passed. You can get your home restored if you have homeowner's insurance, flood insurance, and water damage insurance.
Take images of the damage before you begin cleaning. This is to assist with your insurance claim. You should also contact your carrier immediately to report the damage and have an adjuster come out to examine the amount of damage.
